Mark E. Smith kicks off his eight millionth long-player with a demonic chuckle before launching into another dark, unrelenting grouchfest. The word "curmudgeon" was probably coined specifically to describe Smith, but he still sounds as vigorously energized as ever alongside his new band. The Fall will always sound like the Fall, no matter who's pounding away behind Smith, but you can tell the songs apart again and there's even a lovingly straight-faced cover of Merle Haggard's "White Line Fever."
