New Jersey's Gaslight Anthem belong to a tradition of American punk that also includes The Replacements and Social Distortion, as well as modern bands like The Weight, The Hold Steady and Lucero. We're talking revved-up bar rock, sing-along anthems and the occasional horn section. Had Springsteen come of age in the alt-rock '90s, he would be releasing records that sound exactly like American Slang. "Bring It On," for example, is so totally Born To Run it's kind of wild. The same could be said of "The Diamond Church Street Choir," yet it also exudes a subtle Thin Lizzy/Van Morrison vibe.
