The Gits' debut is a masterpiece of volatility, each track dark, tense, stretched to its limits and poised to explode. Drummer Steve Moriarty, guitarist Joe Spleen and bassist Matt Dresdner keep the listener uncomfortably, deliciously on edge, hinting at an ever-impinging loss of control but inevitably keeping the sound just short of completely unstable. But it's Mia Zapata you can't take your ears off of: she bellows the blues, her voice heavy and just slightly off-key, as if she's singing her way out from under 50 lbs. of concrete. A hell of a singer. A hell of an album.
