Rocking The Cradle - Egypt 1978
Released: Sep 2008
Label: Grateful Dead/Rhino
Garcia and Weir always insisted the Dead played awfully whenever the world paid attention. This includes Woodstock, as well as 1978's three-concert series in Cairo at the foot of the pyramids. If that's the case, this long-overdue excerpt from the latter event wisely excludes all bum performances. Sure, legend says the Dead were in rough shape in the late '70s. Yet there are some amazing jams here, including a 14-minute "Fire on the Mountain" and a rollicking take on Garcia's solo gem "Deal."
