Ask any tie-dyed college kid what the ultimate Dead album is and 9 times out of 10, he or she will say American Beauty. But more savvy fans know that its predecessor, 1970's Workingman's Dead, is way more conducive to getting mellow with its heavy-lidded country-tinged folk rock ("High Time" and "Dire Wolf"). Though "Uncle John's Band" is just peppy enough to get you off that beanbag chair, it's the medicated strut of the ever-popular "Casey Jones" that begs to be danced to, with its electric country funk and the bygone Pigpen's heavy-handed organ grooves.
