Released: Feb 1998
Label: K Records
One of the Pacific Northwest's unsung indie supergroups, the Halo Benders were the collaborative side project of Built to Spill frontman Doug Martsch and K Records founder Calvin Johnson. The band released three decidedly off-center albums between '94 and '98, and this, their last, is the Benders at their languid, loopy best. Often singing different verses at the same time, Martsch and Johnson pair up like a vocal Abbot and Costello, Johnson's ridiculous slacker baritone fattening up Martsch's reedy shyboy sigh. Smart, silly and soulful, The Rebel is powerful fun.
