Red Night by The Hundred In The Hands
Released: Jun 2012
Label: Warp Records
While there's nothing explicitly retro about The Hundred in the Hands' sophomore album for Warp, it recalls the glory days of '80s alternative rock bands like The Cure and Siouxsie and The Banshees; they've got the same sense of hard-charging urgency and the same silky fusion of rock and electronics. Like Austra and Zola Jesus, they've got a way of making classic forms sound fresh, and they know how to balance atmosphere with hooks, a point driven home on the medieval-sounding "SF Summer" and the mammoth "Empty Stations."
