That "Blue" was the Jayhawks' big hit (a modest Top 40 success...in Canada) demonstrates the plight of the ultimate alt country bridesmaids, but this is the definition of the Jayhawks' creative peak. George Drakoulias and pianist Karen Grotberg are key, but it's all about Louris and Olson, whose final collaboration as frontmen is perfectly executed. A rumble of vintage keyboards, tube-distorted riffs and lessons from Petty and Parsons strike a keen balance of sinister rockers, frail ballads and arching mid-tempo heartache. Wilco's Jeff Tweedy owes everyone involved a fruit basket.
