Long Journey Home
Released: Jan 1964
Label: Vanguard Records
Just about every record the late Clarence White played on is some kind of innovative masterpiece, and Long Journey Home is no different. Several years before inventing country-rock as a member of the Byrds, the guitarist helped invent progressive bluegrass with the Kentucky Colonels. On these live recordings from 1964, the group's traditional stuff is awesome enough, but pay close attention to the mind-blowing instrumental passages. The Colonels played bluegrass like a pack of post-bop jazzbos.
