A Second of Silence

A Second of Silence by The Knights (Chamber Ensemble)
Released: Apr 2012
Label: Ancalagon LLC
Known for programs that juxtapose new and old works, The Knights were inspired by a comment that composer Morton Feldman made a year before his death about how Franz Schubert brought listeners to "hover … in a register you've never heard." The chamber group's takes on Feldman, Philip Glass and Schubert certainly glow with atmosphere (Schubert's Third and Eighth Symphonies make up the bulk of the recording). But it's Feldman's "Madame Press Died Last Week at Ninety" -- a brief elegy for the composer's childhood piano teacher -- that is rendered most lovingly.
