Volume Contrast Brilliance
The Monochrome Set
Released:
Jan 1991
Label:
Cherry Red Records
This completely brilliant compilation of the Monochrome Set singles, John Peel sessions, BBC radio appearances and alternate versions plays like a cohesive album. While the Set's Velvet Underground-meets-Henry Mancini style was too stark and odd for new wave and too funny and retro for post-punk, this essential collection shows that they were one of the most creative (not to mention fun) bands of the 1980s alternative scene. Lead singer Bid also came up with the best song titles ever: "Silicone Carne," "The Jet Set Junta," "Viva Death Row," "Ten Don't for Honeymooners." Listen to "Silicone Carne" while reading US magazine â we dare you.
