Trouble Will Find Me (Explicit)
by The National
Released: May 2013
On The National's least anthemic album since their debut, they squeeze new drops of life from subtlety, particularly with melody ("I Need My Girl" deploys hints of African soukous guitar unheard from the band since "Secret Meeting") and humor (one protagonist is sated with "beer and Tylenol," while another piles up rhymes for "Graceless"). Like all National albums, it takes a while for the muted, propulsive drums and gentle hooks to sink in. Matt Berninger doesn't scream, making Easter eggs like "I was in Guns 'n Roses" all the easier to miss among the distractingly beautiful fretwork.
