Departing
The Rural Alberta Advantage
Released:
Feb 2011
Label:
Saddle Creek Records
A strong fit on Conor Oberst's Saddle Creek Records, these Canadians have all the sense and sensibility of indie rock's most gut-wrenching performers. Vocalist Nils Edenloff's cracking croon teeters like a precarious vase ready to shatter; sometimes he could be mistaken for the gruff Van Morrison, sometimes the delicate Jeff Mangum. His heartfelt laments on love, loss and life in Canada are bolstered by Amy Cole's harmonies, keyboard and percussion and Paul Banwatt's explosive drumming (see "Tornado '87"). This sophomore effort almost rolls by in a flash; it's indie folk for the open road.
