On their second album, The Soft Pack enrich their garage-rock/surf-pop sound with lots of free-sounding horns, keyboards and organs. It makes for a more psychedelic, sometimes even jazzy affair, with songs like "Tallboy," "Ray's Mistake" and "Bound to Fall" working a sort of Stones-meets-Byrds vibe. Meanwhile, "Bobby Brown" goes new wave and funky, "Head on Ice" runs at a post-punk pace, "Captain Ace" gets jam-band freaky, and closer "Densmore's Gone" is like The Doors via Dick Dale. The jangly guitars, crisp or fuzzy, accentuate it all; the lyrics may be dark, but the music is a blast.
