There isn't a whole lot of difference between The Twilight Singers and The Afghan Whigs. Moreover, Dynamite Steps sounds a lot like the latter's two best albums: Congregation and Gentlemen. With a moody, soul-infused fusion of modern rock and baroque-folk for a backdrop, Greg Dulli continues to cry, howl and wail about rotten love and spoiled relationships. He trusts no one, and no one trusts him. Life is nothing more than bloody wreckage, shattered glass and violent sex. As always, longtime Dulli fans will love Dynamite Steps; his detractors, meanwhile, will roll their eyes and move on.
