Who Will Cut Our Hair When We're Gone
by The Unicorns
Released: Oct 2003
Label: Alien8 Recordings
While it's interesting mainly as a talisman of the online music cognoscenti's short-lived fanaticism for all things Montreal, Who Will Cut Our Hair When We're Gone? is full of the kind of disaffected wit that would characterize much of the later '00s underground-noise stuff, from No Age to Vampire Weekend. Here, the guitars are chirpy and erratic, the drums proudly simplistic, and everyone seems to sing -- or do Vincent Price impressions -- whenever the heck they feel like it. It wasn't the most lasting formula, but it was good enough to earn The Unicorns 15 minutes of hipster adoration.
