"She might just be the one," cries The Weeknd on "Adaptation" as a loop of The Police's "Bring on the Night" bubbles underneath. Is this a kinder Abel Tesfaye that finally wants true love? Maybe not: "I'm in my city in the summer, camo'ed out, leather-booted, kissing b*tches in the club," he brags on "Live For." Yet no matter how clichéd his lyrics of strippers and cash, his sonic vision is as gloriously gothic as ever. Despite his many alt-R&B copyists, The Weeknd is still singular, and when he sings, "You'll learn how to love how to dream" on the title track, you'll believe in him.
