TMBG have settled into a fertile, comfortable middle age, alternating goofy, buoyant, and slyly dark indie-pop albums with their new racket making equally goofy and only slightly dark children's albums. Join Us is nominally "adult," which means John Linnell gets to sing a bright, horn-driven jam called "When Will You Die," and John Flansburgh follows it with "Protagonist," a pleasingly loopy lope about a would-be actor whose lousy life is a terrible script: "She stole my daydreams/ She stole my air guitar/ Exterior, man on lawn/ Alone at dawn." They can still fill that birdhouse in your soul.
