On his first solo album since 2011's Ravedeath, 1972, electronic music's most imposing dronesmith shows a side we haven't seen before. He still works on a grand, almost monolithic scale, but he eases off the rumbling intensity he once achieved by running pipe organs through a distortion unit, turning instead to live performances for piano, synthesizer and woodwinds as the raw material for Virgins' sprawling sound world. Pulsing like a living thing and awash in texture and tone color, it's a stunningly, almost dauntingly beautiful work, and his clear masterpiece so far.
