Label: Warner Bros.
The first record with the Heartbreakers in the better part of a decade, Echo boasts spare arrangements and an intimate feel that make it a world-weary cousin of Wildflowers, as does the sound achieved by returning producer Rick Rubin. "Free Girl Now" has a stomping roots rock vibe that makes it the record's most memorable tune, but, like so much of Petty's catalogue, the LP is consistently written and there are few misses. The highlight of Echo is the masterful performance of the reunited Heartbreakers, who operate behind Petty with the perfect balance of restraint and abandon.
