Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers have always been a passionate concert band that combines Beatles/Byrds-style guitar with a lean version of Southern rock and an almost proto new-wave directness. These 48 cuts span from 1978 to 2007 and run across four discs, enough space to give fans classics, catalog cuts and instrumental covers. Petty's strengths are in his songwriting (including his tart, unsentimental lyrics) and his decades-long consistency, while the Heartbreakers remain one of the tightest outfits in all of rock history. The only complaint is the songs aren't in chronological order.
