Don't get your hopes up: This is Tom Ze, and he's not going to give you what you expect. The experimental Brazilian neither mangles nor updates bossa nova -- he just toys with it. The 13 original songs reference 13 bossa nova standards, and each track offers history lessons and critique in equal quantities. It makes for a post-modern listening experience; to appreciate it fully, you need to know your history and Portuguese. But Ze doesn't leave the aesthetes totally hanging. He trucks in a load of excellent singers to make this mental album sound pretty -- very bossa nova of him, actually.
