It's unlikely that Tricky will ever top his first two albums, but he certainly hasn't run out of surprises. Mixed Race opens with a creepy acoustic blues number that ends all too soon, and with the next song he's riffing on Daft Punk and exploring postcolonial identity. "Hakim" melds Middle Eastern traditional music, sung in Arabic, with ghostly electro, while "Murder Weapon" bizarrely reprises the "Duane Eddy" theme. It's not so much a mixed bag as a grab bag, but the sinister mood coheres throughout. If you had stopped listening to Tricky, this album is a good excuse to start again.
