Dirging for interminable stretches over repetitive drum patterns in a dogged attempt to sound inexorably bleak, ex-Celtic Frost gut-punch-grunt god Tom G. Warrior's latest unit makes doom metal that doesn't sound much like anybody else's. But it also doesn't give you much to hang your hat on, and with every song exceeding 5:45 and some way longer, it's a major endurance test. Some sick (in a good way) moments, though: Perfumed goth-gal counterpoint ("Boleskine House"); flamboyantly theatrical switchoffs ("In the Sleep of Death"); minor key Joy Division drones ("Aurorae"); plus a riff or two.
