Five decades ago, West Side Story brought rival street gangs, Latin jazz rhythms, romance, racism and Shakespearean tragedy to Broadway. While the influence of the show has never waned, neither has Leonard Bernstein's brilliant score. This anniversary set combines jazz (Brubeck, Previn, Eldar), stage renditions and wide-eyed vocal pop by the likes of Streisand and Mathis. While not exactly the most cohesive way to understand the continued influence of the show, there is a lot to appreciate here. Now, if only they had included Steven Sondheim's still pungent lyrics to "America."
