The soundtrack to the Nick Hornby-penned coming-of-age picture is a reminder that the majority of the 1960s took place a world away from acid rock and Woodstock mud baths. The tunes here are a pitch-perfect mix of early rock 'n' roll, jazz, lounge music, dramatic English pop and beatnik chanson. While artists like Mel Torme, Vince Guaraldi and Ray Charles are always welcome, the set is also enhanced by surprisingly simpatico modern numbers by Melody Gardot, Duffy, Madeleine Peyroux and Beth Rowley (a fierce young talent who's feted in Britain). This plays like a valentine to the listener.
