This 2003 soundtrack is just as stylish and fast-paced as the movie it scored. Starting with a quartet of funk- and soul-infused original songs from composer Antonio Pinto (with collaborator Ed Cortes), City of God soon after slips into the arms of singers who defined the '70s in Brazil -- samba-soul pioneers like Hyldon, Raul Seixas and Tim Maia. The stoned cool of these songs (punctuated by some full-on samba) stood in counterpoint to the film's frequent violence, as if pleading -- with little effect -- couldn't we all just get along?
