Epic/Legacy
Started by ex-Verve and A&M Records man Creed Taylor, CTI quickly became the biggest jazz label of the 1970s by recording its stellar roster (George Benson, Ron Carter, Paul Desmond, Milt Jackson) in lushly produced settings that drew production ideas from diverse rock, pop, disco and classical sources. Often derided at the time, these funky and fun CTI recordings have held up surprisingly well, especially if you are the type of person who enjoys the idea of Lalo Schifron disco-izing the theme to Jaws (listen to that electro intro, the man is responsible for creating rave music!). That said, there is plenty of non-ironic joys here as well, including Esther Phillips' searing cover of "Home Is Where the Hatred Is."
