Cumbia Beat Volume 1
by Various Artists
Released: May 2010
Rock'n'roll had Lima in its grip in the '60s, but it lost out to chicha, the drunken, psychedelic, patently strange music that took rock instruments and used them to attack cumbia, Peruvian folk, Cuban music -- whatever fell in its sights. Even the most fervent fan of vintage amazonica might balk at the sheer volume of songs here: 25 tracks of wah-wah peddle and electric organ is a lot, no matter the genre. But kookiness breeds forgiveness, especially when these bands venture into Cuba ("Guajira sicodelica") and give themselves cool names (viva Los Demonios de Corocochay!).
