During the 1950s and '60s, Walt Disney's popular live-action films actually funded his risky, expensive animated features. The timeless Mary Poppins combined the two Disney forms to brilliant effect. Julie Andrews turned numbers such as "Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious" and "Spoonful of Sugar" into eternal childhood favorites. Dick Van Dyke fits songs like "Chim Chim Cheree" so well that it doesn't matter how creaky his "mockney" accent is. Sadly, this and The Sound of Music ended up hurting Andrews' career once musicals and family films went out of fashion. That's the price you pay for becoming an icon of a particular genre, whether you wanted to be one or not.
