Monteverdi: L'incoronazione di Poppea (Complete)
by Various Artists
Released: Jun 1996
In his final opera, Monteverdi told the story of Poppea, the scheming mistress and then wife of Roman emperor Nero. Sung with wonderful Baroque agility by Sylvia McNair, Poppea shines, as does her future husband and murderer Nero, sung by Dana Hanchard. The minor characters fail to rise to the spirit of the era in their vocal approach but still give delightful, if heavy, performances. John Eliot Gardiner leads the lean period ensemble with conviction
