The four-disc box set Mountain Gospel: The Sacred Roots of Country Music is the ultimate introduction to the religious music of early-20th-century Appalachia. Though a good chunk of this music (namely work by Alfred G. Karnes and the legendary Ernest V. Stoneman) appears on other compilations, Mountain Gospel sheds much-needed light on overlooked traditions, including the ensemble singing of groups like Laurel Fireman's Quartet and Ernest Phipps & His Holiness Quartet. This is moving stuff for sure.
