Music From Baz Luhrmann's Film The Great Gatsby
(Bonus Tracks, Explicit)
by Various Artists
This lavish film adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald's legendary Roaring 20s novel sports a Jay-Z-branded soundtrack and various stabs at updating pop trends with swing jazz, some more successful (Emeli Sande and Kid Koala's charming "Crazy In Love") than others (Bryan Ferry's bland revisit of his classic "Love is the Drug"). The best tracks bypass period-piece gimmicks for cinematic melancholy, like Lana Del Rey's high-gloss emoting on "Young and Beautiful," and Nero's prog-house symphony "Into the Past." The anguished blues rock of Jack White's "Love is Blindness" is in a league of its own.
