Much like Mario Van Peebles' 1991 crime drama, which couldn't decide between condemning its flashy "new jack" crack dealers and reveling in their exploits, this soundtrack is an uneven mess, but it's due to a lack of quality tracks instead of mediocre filmmaking. Its best-known hits include Ice-T's "New Jack Hustler" and Color Me Badd's "I Wanna Sex You Up," while Christopher Williams' "I'm Dreamin'" and Keith Sweat's "There You Go" also satisfy. The rest of the album hasn't dated well, but stick around for F.S. Effect's Afrocentric fast-rap on the hip-house track "Get It Together."
