Euronymous (Oystein Aarseth) was the guitarist for pioneering Norwegian black metal band Mayhem and founder of Deathlike Silence Productions. As the owner of Oslo record store Helvete (old Norse for "hell"), he was also the perceived leader of the black metal scene that basically sprouted from his store in the early '90s, until he was murdered by bandmate Varg Vikernes in 1993. This compilation, released at the height of the black metal explosion in 1995, features a cross-section of that scene performing previously unreleased and original material in honor of the fallen guitarist.
