Our New Orleans

by Various Artists
Our New Orleans by Various Artists
Released: Dec 2005
Label: Nonesuch
All of the New Orleans heavyweights -- Dr. John, Allen Toussaint, Buckwheat Zydeco, Wild Magnolias and Dirty Dozen Brass Band -- are here. Charlie Miller's "Prayer for New Orleans" and Preservation Hall Jazz Band's "Do You Know What It Means to Miss New Orleans" are haunting elegies to the Crescent City. But the most poignant track isn't even by a New Orleans resident. Randy Newman's "Louisiana 1927" chronicles the devastation caused by the flood of 1927, and demonstrates that the noxious mixture or racism and classism that exacerbated Katrina's destruction didn't spring up overnight.
