Purcell: Dido and Aeneas
by Various Artists
Released: Sep 1989
Purcell's most famous semi-opera, Dido and Aeneas, captures the tragic love of Virgil's pair, culminating in Dido's lament "When I am laid in earth." Von Otter's Dido is bigger than Baroque, but Lynne Dawson's Belinda ("Thanks to these lonesome vales") is pure period grace. This recording with Trevor Pinnock's English Consort is the first to follow the seventeenth-century casting and theatrical markings of Purcell.
