World Music Network has called this a guide to Roots Revival, but Roots Repurposing might be more accurate. The Bedouin Jerry Can Band, for instance, plays unplugged desert blues (itself already a hybrid) on "junk" left by Israeli occupiers. And Konono No. 1 do their electro-trad thing, rocking out the trippy, indie-friendly jams on their amplified mbira (itself an adaptive, border-jumping instrument). What Roots Revival documents, then, is the newest generation's take on the longstanding African musical practice of blurring the line between tradition and innovation -- and it sounds good.
