Forget what you think you know about Ethiopian music. Or, rather, get ready to radically expand the limited picture most of us have. This comp takes the familiar pentatonic strains of ethio-groove as its starting point, with cuts from the classic Ethiopiques series and funked-up, hip-hop fried reworkings from Bole @ Harlem and Dub Colossus. But then the funk spreads across churning garage rock; snakey jazz; Orchestra Ethiopia’s traditional drums and wheezing flutes; and “Sek’Let’s” deep, buzzing begena harp. A vibrant mix of traditional and pop that does its job: makes you want to learn more.
