Initially, it's a bit disconcerting to hear the combination of legendary South African musician/activist Vusi Mahlasela -- who brings a swirling mass of musical references to his home country -- and producer Taj Mahal's bluesy licks and jam-rock references to studio head Dave Matthews. But then you sink into the folksy vibe of it and see the global singer-songwriter network Mahlasela traces: the banjo of "In Anyway" linking its African roots and country-blues evolution, the choral voices of "Vez'ubuhle" weaving in and out of accordion strains and Afro-pop rhythms like a friendly conversation.
