Sleepless Nights

Sleepless Nights by Various Artists
Released: Apr 1976
Label: HIP-O (PG)/Fontana
With a title that was allegedly originally slated to be used for Grievous Angel, Sleepless Nights was released three years after Gram Parsons died. Highlighted by a trio of duets with Emmylou Harris, it collects deep-cut country covers Parsons recorded before his untimely death. Most of the songs were recorded while he was still in The Byrds, which probably accounts for the slow-motion tempos. The almost narcotic pace and pervasive heartbreaking lyrics help to cement Parsons' legacy as a doomed purveyor of sad, sad music. You can practically hear him shooting up in "Honky Tonk Women."
