The much lauded "Stax sound" was actually the result of an architectural accident. The recording studio was built in a closed movie theater where the seats had been stripped, resulting in an imbalanced room that yielded deep, raw acoustics. The result is classics like Otis Redding's "Security" or Wendy Reed's tortured "After Laughter (Comes Tears)," the latter of which was famously sampled by RZA for Wu Tang Clan's "Tearz."
