This compilation brings together selections from nine Wynton Marsalis recordings made between 1999 and 2000, from the Swingin' into the 21st series and a few later compositions. It's a celebratory retrospective of the trumpeter's 50th birthday that covers a ton of ground, from the abstract lines of Monk's "Hackensack" to the second-line jive of "Juba and A O'Brown Squaw" and the orchestral selections. The small group sessions find Marsalis at his most engaging.
