Worlds away from "Don't You Want Me," this collection of late '70s demos presents a very different picture of the Human League than most pop fans know. Working with a minimal kit of analog synths, drum machines, and magnetic tape, the Sheffield group (then known as the Future) creates spindly, dissonant rhythm tracks and unnerving ambient sketches halfway between disco and musique concrete. The results are similar to those achieved by fellow Sheffield group Cabaret Voltaire, giving pop music a newly avant-garde edge.
