As this fantastic compilation demonstrates, there was more to Mod music than The Who. Outside of The Small Faces' "Grow Your Own" and Tom Jones' "Dr. Love," an oddly convincing slice of mainstream appropriation, most of these cuts were rarely heard outside the clubs popular with Mods in the 1960s. There are some tough grooves here. St. Louis Union's "East Side Story" is a bruising rewrite of "Gloria." Another good one is Amen Corner's hard-hitting "Expressway To Your Heart." But the best of all is The Attack's "We Don't Know," which is just as heavy as anything on The Who's debut album.
