Dangerously cute and prone to panty-dropping album covers, Veronica Orozco wouldn't really have to sing well to grab attention. So it's all the more impressive that her 2006 debut really deserves its press: Orozco's expressive, little-girl voice is knowing and coy one minute, truly innocent the next. She rips off tango, trip-hop (complete with a short rap) and '50s American rock, and she does justice to them all. And, when called upon, she can deliver a smoky-voiced performance over acoustic guitar. To which we must say, with understatement: not bad, not bad at all.
