Vic Chesnutt is a singer-songwriter and folkie. However, the excellent At the Cut betrays the dude's love for Ozzy and Black Sabbath. Now that sounds strange, and it's not to imply Chesnutt is now cranking out monolithic stoner-rock. But just listen to tracks like "Coward" and "Philip Guston" with an open mind. Both contain a love for drama and bombast that's totally reminiscent of early metal. These qualities are only accentuated by his backing band: droning post-rockers A Silver Mt. Zion.
