This extraordinary first album from 46-year-old Burkina Faso native Victor Deme deserves praise, flower wreaths, gifts of money ... whatever it takes to thank Deme for an album that feels like a breath of unfettered, fresh music in an overly produced music world. Deme sounds like an American bluesman singing in Dioula one minute, a Cape Verdean exile the next, but what always shines through is his fidelity to himself and the music. He's most stunning on the unadorned, acoustic tracks: songs like "Deni Kemba" and "D'jon Maya" feel as beautifully familiar as old, long-lost friends.
