Wadada Leo Smith's trumpet played a key role in the early days of Chicago's Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians. And while he's a composer of note, too, Smith's fully free-improvisational side is another part of his legacy. Here, he teams up with pianist Angelica Sanchez for an album full of on-the-spot improv. Their telepathic togetherness, regardless of whether they're navigating moments of balladry or abstraction, is so complete on opener "Cones of Chrome" that you'd be forgiven for wondering if they can sustain it for nearly an hour. Spoiler alert: they can.
