These 16 previously unreleased tracks from the late, lamented piano-and-pills man were among 100 uncovered by his son in a San Fernando Valley storage space. Ten are early versions of studio favorites; sometimes awkward and shaky, they can also sound thrillingly like he's making them up on the spot. But the six that never made it onto any album are the real treasures: "Rosarita Beach Cafe" and "Stop Rainin' Lord" are classic Zevon tales of inebriated loserdom. They're so good you might cry, and you won't know if it's from missing him or from feeling so bad for the folks he sings about.
